I didn't study trauma from a distance. I lived it. Abuse. Violence. A culture that taught me a man doesn't cry, doesn't ask for help, doesn't back down.

So I led the only way I knew: fear, shame and anger. In 2016, about to take over a team, I walked into a therapist's office. Hardest room I ever entered. Best decision I ever made.

I'm a father, and a former single parent. The cycle stops with somebody. I decided it stops with me. That's a choice you make every day, not once.

About Alex

Portrait of Dr. Alex Zayas

In 2023 I earned my PhD in Leadership & Change from Antioch University. My dissertation, From a Boy to a Leader, is an autoethnography of childhood trauma, abuse and violence, set against masculinity and Latino culture. It's open access through the OhioLINK ETD Center and AURA.

Today

Faith carried me through it. Not perfection. Redemption. Today I live in Phoenix, I'm writing my memoir, and I speak to anyone ready to have the real conversation and do the work after it.
